Welcome to the new website of the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB).  We hope you find it both interesting and informative.

Here, you’ll find an overview of our OIG mission, what you can find on our site, and tips on how you can help prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse.

All Americans should rightly expect excellence, accountability, and efficiency from our government.  To that end, Congress passed the Inspector General Act in 1978 to ensure integrity and efficiency within the federal government and its agencies and programs.  The NRC’s OIG was established in 1989 as an independent and objective organization to conduct audits and investigations relating to the NRC’s programs and operations.  In 2014, Congress assigned this OIG to also serve as the Inspector General for the DNFSB.

The Inspector General serves under the general supervision of the NRC Chairman but operates with personnel, contracting, and budget authority independent of the NRC.  It is our job to oversee the NRC and DNFSB, and ensure that the agencies themselves, Congress, and the American people, are kept fully and currently informed about any problems we detect, any recommended corrective actions we suggest, and the results of agency progress in implementing such corrective actions.

For both the NRC and the DNFSB, our mission is the same:  to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse.  In addition to conducting audits and investigations, we review existing and proposed regulations, legislation, and directives, and provide comments regarding any significant concerns.  We accomplish all this with a talented staff of auditors, investigators, analysts, legal, administrative, and other professionals who are dedicated to promoting economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in NRC and DNFSB programs and operations.

Our website offers valuable information on the work we do, the reports we produce, and the people we hire, but most importantly it offers you the means to contact us through our OIG Hotline, or through our Whistleblower Protection Coordinator, if you know of or suspect fraud, waste, or abuse within the NRC or the DNFSB.  Regardless of the issue your raise, you can rest assured that you will be heard, and we will respond.

Our goals are to strengthen the agencies’ efforts to protect public health and safety and the environment, strengthen the agencies’ efforts to enhance security in an evolving threat environment, and increase the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness with which the agencies manage and exercise stewardship over their resources.  We can only achieve those goals with your help.  You may submit your concerns to us anonymously or confidentially.

Thank you for visiting our site, and for your interest in our Office of the Inspector General.
